On June 9th, 2013 Earth Children Network, (Reseau Enfants De LaTerre) celebrated the World Environment Day.  On this occasion, an awareness day, a day ‘FOR THE ENVIRONMENT, AGAINST POLLUTION’ , as ECN chose to call was organized. The event took place at Nahli Park, Ariana, a place where people visit to enjoy beautiful natural scenes, fresh air and green trees and plants.
There’s no doubt that the responsibility of protecting the environment is not only of ecologists, but it also requires the combined efforts of all activists in society: the government, parents, children, teachers, artists…
Because of that, ECN relied on the different components of the society to take part in this day and participate in workshops led by artists and educators.
First, children were engaged in a drawing and painting workshop.  Contributors from Bardo Center and Sijoumi and Khaznadar prep schools dealt with ‘Fighting Against Pollution’ theme.

Another group of teens from ‘Sijoumi Environment Club’ took part in a discussion forum.  They talked about Sijoumi as a wetland and its Sebkha (lagoon), aspects of pollution there and ways of protecting it.  They focused on the necessity of saving the various birds endangered and threatened with extinction.
Later, Mrs Nadia Chaouachi, animated a workshop about waste neutralization and recycling.  She showed the present kids how to reuse and turn certain useless plastic bottles and cans into funny beautiful things for decoration

Lotfi Ben Sassi, a famous Tunisian caricaturist was also present to animate a workshop of caricatures.  It was an opportunity to highlight the roles of artists to criticize Man’s harms to Nature and expressing humans’ feelings  and trying to save our environment.
The show was carried on with Borj Twil prep school play about the importanc of keeping Nature clean and safe.  A teen boy performed his own rap song illustrating Tunisian national history and men.  These were under the supervision of educator Sourour Nakti, Secretary of ECN.
We should mention, that ECN is an association which works on promoting ecological behavior in kids through kids themselves.  This can be done by establishing a based-communication to achieve a better environmental education approach.  Since adults have failed to protect their environment, children must grow up with a certain awareness and ambition to realize what we couldn’t do.
Generally, the event was very successful.  All the attendees were excited and active.  They enjoyed not only the fantastic natural settings of the place in a summer weather, but also the various activities given on this occasion.  Children were given a lot of presents urging them to be Earth Defenders.
Finally, we should be grateful to all members and adherents of ECN for their great efforts in saving our planet.
